Stoppage time goal sinks Greens
By John Anderson
Binfield snatch the points
After a narrow win in midweek against one East Berkshire side, The Greens suffered, in the most agonising fashion, against another. The Team Management had the unusual luxury of fielding an unchanged side, apart from recalling Alex Partridge in place of the unavailable Aaron Brown in goal. The first half produced little action, but what did usually came from the home side’s right flank. Tom Fifield probably fashioned Holmer’s best chance himself, on 43 minutes, but shot wide. HT 0-0
On 52 minutes the crowd held their breath. A Binfield player appeared to handle just inside his own penalty-area. The Referee’s whistle sounded, but he had in fact given a foul against the visitors’ for a minor infringement seconds earlier. It would have been against the general run of the play. On 58 minutes Holmer was definitely disadvantaged. Matt Wooster was fouled. A quick free-kick appeared to release James Britnell beyond the home defence, into the penalty box. But the Referee had given no signal for the free-kick to be taken, as he considered the foul to be worthy of a caution. Both sides fashioned chances, with Binfield mostly in the ascendency. Holmer’s best opportunity came when Dean Powles weaved his way into the Binfield area on 86 minutes. The ball seemed to take a bobble, and his effort just cleared the bar. It was not until two minutes into stoppage time that the only goal came. A Holmer Green free-kick at one end was swiftly turned into a home attack. The one Holmer player who could have intercepted the hack out of defence decided to retreat, and this was a mistake. Binfield calmly fashioned a chance, from 20 yards out, that Davies took consummately. Six points from their first four games is a total the Holmer can be happy with. But the question remains the same, following Dean Allen’s departure two years ago. Where are the goals going to come from?
