Greens comeback thwarted by the conditions.
Premier Division Cup, Round 2
Holmer Green 6 Colney Heath 6
Abandoned at Full Time due to dangerous conditions.
Biggleswade United will have to wait to find out which of these sides will travel to Bedfordshire for the quarter-final?
Groundsman Neil Gardner had worked miracles to get the Airedale Park pitch in good condition. But the weather came out on top, as the next scheduled bout of persistent rain arrived on schedule during the match. Holmer started poorly, and the visitors were four goals up in 33 minutes through Parkinson, Bailey (2), and Scott-Morris. The Greens started their comeback on 41 minutes, when Dean Powles got beyond McGrandles to slip the ball past Perks. HT 1-4
With the rain now falling steadily and the wind behind them Holmer took just six minutes to get their second, when Powles crossed low for Tom Peddle-James to score from close range. Another six minutes had elapsed when Ryan Tackley headed in from a Gary Lines’ free-kick, to make it 3-4. The comeback was momentarily completed when Peddle-James cut infield from close to the dug-outs. His fierce shot from 30 yards arced into the top right corner of the Colney net on 58 minutes. There were still 4 goals to come in the next 17 minutes, as conditions quickly deteriorated. First Armstrong restored Heath’s lead. Only for Alex Murray to control a seemingly good punch-out from Perks, and fire the ball straight back over the ‘keeper into the roof of the net from 25 yards. (5-5). A couple of Colney cautions lead to free-kicks, the second of which proved productive. Dean Allen emulated Peddle-James’ long distance effort to put Holmer ahead, for the only time on the night. Within two minutes Clarke made it 6-6, when the Holmer defence conceded a poor goal from a lofted cross into the six-yard area for the third time in a very eventful game.
The Competition Rules do not allow for extra-time to be dispensed with, and going straight to penalties. The Referee decided that there was no prospect of the game being finished in such poor conditions. A decision from the League is awaited on both venue and date for the replay.
