Greens go out of Challenge Trophy

No repeat of Saturday's success
Manager Chris Allen decided to give players who have spent some time on the bench lately a starting position. Manny Kadima was injured at Broadwater in the league encounter on Saturday, but basically two similar teams lined up against each other again. In the third minute, Holmer should have been awarded a penalty. Dean Powles turned his man smartly well within the penalty-area. But unfortunately the Referee did not have such a good view of the defender’s tug as your correspondent did, and refused Holmer’s appeals. On 11 minutes Berko went ahead. A deep right-wing cross was headed back across the goal and Calcutt out-jumped Ben Boulter to score. After the visiting ‘keeper had thwarted Ryan Tackley from a Gary Lines left-wing corner, the home side should really have equalised on 30 minutes. Tackley and Eliot Derby combined on the right, to set up Lines to centre accurately to the far post. The usually reliable Dean Allen met the ball firmly with his head, but the ball went over the bar. On 37 minutes a Berko forward received the ball behind the Holmer defence in a suspicious looking position. When the Assistant’s flag was not raised the ball was squared to Calcutt, who had time to look up and check for a late flag before scoring. The muted Berko celebrations, on the field, indicated a possible injustice. HT 0-2
Holmer’s attempts to get in the game received a set-back on 52 minutes. A Berko player kicked the ball away to prevent Lines taking a quick throw, and the Holmer full-back unwisely decided to take retribution in the form of a trip. The Referee dismissed him from the field of play. To rub salt into the wound, the visiting offender was not cautioned for delaying the restart of play. The game was fairly tame from then on. Holmer made three substitutions, as did Berko, but it was not until the final minutes that Calcutt completed the scoring and his own hat-trick with a close-range header.
