Game abandoned very early on
By John Anderson
Holmer will now face Edgware Town a minimum of 5 times this season!
Holmer Green 1 Edgware Town 0
Abandoned after 12 minutes
If you ever think that you have seen everything in football after watching hundreds or even thousands of games, think again?
After the convincing 6-1 win against Town in midweek, The Greens started on the front foot and were rewarded early on. On 7 minutes Tom Gant found plenty of room down the Holmer right, and cut back onto his left foot. His deep cross was met by Greg Deer’s head and the ball sped comfortably across Bonfield into the bottom of the net. Holmer had enjoyed good possession up to his point, and the Watchet Lane faithful were confident of a repeat of Tuesday’s comfortable win. But on 12 minutes the Referee felt that some abuse that he was receiving from a particular away supporter was excessive, and peremptorily decided to abandon the match.
Holmer offered JJ Jarrett as a linesman if the senior Assistant would take over the Referee’s duties but this offer was refused because, apparently, the Match Referee had already abandoned the game. At no time was Holmer Green FC asked to arrange for the removal of the culpable spectator from the ground. Both clubs now await word from their respective County FA’s, which will presumably mean they will appear before separate Disciplinary Committees, before the League can order that the match to be replayed or otherwise.
