London Colney 1 Holmer Green 2
With at least 11 straight defeats to The Blueboys over the last five seasons, The Greens finally got the better of last season’s Champions since the latter’s return to The Premier Division. The two Deans, Powles and Munday, returned to the starting line-up. Holmer kicked down the slope in the first half, which was only really notable for the early heavy rain. HT 0-0
Now kicking towards the clubhouse, The Greens were playing well in a fairly even game. Bringing on Leo Blackman for Raiqwan Joseph on the hour, it was the visitors that went ahead on 68 minutes. Jonty Summerell’s left-wing corner-kick evaded the crowd in the centre of the goal, and caused confusion at the home side’s far post. The ball bounced off the hip of one defender and somehow evaded another on the post, and squeezed between him and the upright into the net. This not undeserved stroke of fortune shouldn’t have been wiped out so soon. But two minutes later Ryan Parsons was shoulder-charged in the back, near to the corner flag. The Referee surprisingly awarded the hosts a corner-kick. From the kick Luca Gaster misjudged the number of bodies at the near post, and failed to intercept the ball. Kambo Smith was able to nudge the loose ball over the line. A very rare mistake by the young ‘keeper, who has grabbed the opportunity of first team football very competently. With the rain beginning again this unfortunate setback didn’t deter Holmer. An injured Ben Bradley had to be replaced by JJ Jarrott with 15 minutes remaining, and Aaron Couch made way for Anthony Tyson in the 83rd minute. As against Cockfosters, Tyson’s late presence brought its reward. A James Burrell free-kick pickd out Powles’ run towards the near post, with just two minutes of normal time remaining. A diving header produced the desired result. Burrell then got a foot in to prevent a long shot at Gaster, and there was just time for a long London Colney throw to be dealt with before the final whistle. Another two places up the fledgling league table was just reward for a team which had to contend with at least three unavailable squad members, as well as County Cup eligibility concerns in the Development XI game at Watchet Lane.
