Holmer allow Jets back into game
By John Anderson
Good away point on paper, but should have been more
Both teams will feel that two points slipped away from them in a game of two distinct halves. Holmer went into the break with a two-goal lead, despite Jets having plenty of the play and some opportunities. But the home side were much better all-round in the second period, and The Greens had to defend well to earn the point especially in the last ten minutes or so. After an even first ten minutes, Holmer took the lead. Kofi Lockhart-Adams chased the ball into the corner, and laid it back for Tom Peddle-James. The winger was already in the penalty-area when a stray Jets’ leg tripped him up from behind. Dean Powles sent the kick smartly beyond Partington. On 27 minutes Jets were denied by Luca Gaster’s legs, but 12 minutes later Holmer almost made it 2-0. Curtis Stone’s free-kick came back off the face of the left-hand post. Lockhart–Adams then became the third player to be cautioned. When the Referee was fooled by a home player, who showed absolutely no ill-effects from the “injury” over the next 50+ minutes. A minute before the break The Greens increased their lead. Michael Adesete got a firm tackle in on the edge of the home penalty-area. The ball spun viciously and bounced away from the diving ’keeper. Peddle-James kept his cool, and rounded the grounded custodian to tap the ball in. HT 0-2
On the hour Jets seemed to have a way back into the game. Callum Mapley, who was generally sound in defence, slipped up and brought his man down. But again Gaster’s legs did the business from 12 yards, and Holmer maintained their two-goal lead. This should have been the spur for Holmer to have a go at a deflated opposition, but their general second-half play did not improve. After a near-post let-off from a corner on 64 minutes, The Greens conceded a long-range effort six minutes later. The Jet’s centre-forward should have been closed down, but he wasn’t. His speculative shot bounced and kicked up in front of the diving Gaster to reduce the arrears. The home side now really stepped up their efforts. Lockhart-Adams did his bit by chasing back, unfortunately giving away a free-kick on the touchline. That will happen, but kicking the ball away is not a wise move when already having received a caution. So Holmer faced the remainder of the game with only ten men. Within three minutes, Jets was level. The Green’s defence was too easily turned on the right. The lofted cross from the bye-line picked out an unmarked runner at the far post, with Gaster having come across to cover the unguarded near post. On 87 minutes Peddle-James was pushed in the back inside the home area right in front of the Assistant in a rare Holmer foray. But no penalty was forthcoming, and Jets continued to press for the winner. An injury to Gaster took the heat off for a minute or so, and the game petered out to an even conclusion. Holmer survived almost 7 minutes of stoppage time, which always seems an interminable period when on the back foot.
