Poor home form continues
Hoddesdon too strong for out of touch Greens
With the pitch being soft and very slippery, The Greens had Alex Murray back at centre-half and James Burrell again at left-back.
Town had not scored in their previous 3 visits to Watchet Lane. But with Holmer fielding quite a few players in unaccustomed positions, the visitors gradually seized the initiative. The Greens improved as the game went into its final half hour, but never really troubled Isham in the Hoddesdon goal.
On 10 minutes Ryan Parsons got in a 25-yard shot which Isham fumbled, and had to recover behind him. But Town went ahead on 24 minutes, when a cross from the left was missed by Murray. The mistake caught Gary Lines and Burrell by surprise, allowing Cowell to control and despatch the ball beyond Luca Gaster. A Lines’ volley over the bar on 35 minutes, was followed two minutes later by a right-wing corner for the home side. Curtis Stone’s kick was met firmly by Michael Adasete, but the downward header was hacked away. Instead of going into the break on the front foot, Holmer carelessly conceded two further goals before half-time. Both scored by Johnson. HT 0-3
A good start by the home side was essential in the second half, but their central defence was absent on 50 minutes. Scully ran through to round Gaster and score the fourth. Substituting Tom Peddle-James and Adasete for Raiqwan Joseph and Ben Booker, Holmer certainly picked up their overall game in the later stages. Joseph drew the Hoddesdon ‘keeper out on 71 minutes, but lost his footing. Isham made a good save from Leo Blackmore two minutes later. But this was a match in which Town showed they are comfortably a top half side, whereas Holmer will probably have to be content with yet another bottom half finish. With The Greens winless run now stretching back two months and eight games, they slip two places down the table. A big game away to bottom side Crawley Green at Barton Rovers is Holmer’s next game this coming Saturday.
