Problems mounting after significant defeat
Lines' heroics not nearly enough against resurgent Luton-based side
With bottom-placed Crawley Green coming off the back of two good performances against top teams after having boosted their Management Team, the last thing Holmer needed was another much changed line-up. Unfortunately yet more late withdrawals unbalanced the side again, and many had to play in unaccustomed positions. Kicking down the slope on a greasy and bumpy surface, The Greens got off to a bad start. If they were kicking uphill the mix-up between Ryan Parsons and Luca Gaster may have seen the ball stop short of the visitors’ goal. But the slope ensured that the defenders touch just had enough momentum to make it over the line and into the goal before the ’keeper recovered. Holmer then competed well for about 35 minutes, but conceded a sloppy goal during late home pressure in the first half when James Burrell, yet again doing his best at emergency left-back, missed a tackle setting up a home player for an easy goal. HT 2-0
A solid beginning to the second period would be required if The Greens were to get back in this game. But within five minutes the offside trap, surely not commensurate with a regularly changing rear-guard, failed and they were three down. Crawley scored further goals on 73 and 89 minutes as Holmer were by-passed all over the field by rejuvenated opponents. A bad day to be forgotten, but lessons must be learned from it. Not necessarily just on the field. Gary Lines must be commended for playing at all, despite being hospitalised twice in the preceding 24 hours.
