The Greens first defeat in December moves Leverstock into 4th place
3 new faces fail to keep up Holmer's recent revival
The “other Greens” moved into fourth place with this away win. Demonstrating that you do not need a big goal difference to do so, but they do seem to have the ability to come out on top in most matches. Two goals in the last 15 minutes settled this game in Levvy’s favour. With injuries and unavailabilities, Holmer used the opportunity to give starts to three new faces. Kieron Cathline replaced Jonty Summerell at right back, Festus Lori deputised for Alex Rice up front, and Wade Holland came in for Matt Wooster. It was the visitors which looked much the better as the first half progressed, and they took advantage of a poor goal kick to go ahead on 24 minutes. The ball was quickly played back through the middle of the The Greens’ rear-guard, and the persistent Bateman took advantage of a fortunate rebound to open the scoring. But on 34 minutes with Lori’s running beginning to stretch the visitors’ back line, Holmer drew level. A Curtis Stone free-kick from out on the left drew the Levvy ‘keeper well off his line. But there was too much traffic, from both sides, in front of him to reach the ball. Jamie Britnell met the free-kick perfectly to head down into an empty goal from twelve yards. The away side missed an easy chance to regain the lead just before half-time, and given the balance of play in the first 45 minutes they must have wondered how they were not comfortably in the lead. HT 1-1
Lori had succumbed to an injury late in the first half, with Anthony Tyson replacing him. Despite this change to the forward line, The Greens actually carved out two very good early chances in the second period. Both involving Leo Blackman. First he chose to wrong option after seeming to get clear of the away defence, the straying marginally offside when getting onto Tom Peddle-James’ short through ball. The Greens were to pay for these missed opportunities later. Both teams defensive record are similar, but up front it is a different story. Leverstock have scored twenty more league goals this season. That is why they are fourth now. Centre-back Britnell had actually become Holmer’s leading scorer this season with his first–half goal. On 76 and 85 minutes the visitors settled the game through Carbone and Garvey. JJ Jarrott and, late on, Martin Lancaster had come on to bolster the Greens’ efforts, but the visitors were good value for the three points.
