Gaster heroics not enough
Blackman scoring streak continues but cannot save Holmer
Holmer’s young side eventually went down because of late goals conceded in each half. But as with Leverstock Green last week, Athletic was the better side. They will probably not be near to the foot of the table much longer, especially if they can produce the form that has seen them into the last 32 of the nationwide Buildbase FA Vase.
Luca Gaster came back into goal, but generally the team was similar to that which has produced encouraging results recently. Whether the late conceding of goals is down to concentration issues, or just plain inexperience, is open to conjecture. But the trend does need to be eradicated.
Kicking down the slope The Greens started well, and nearly scored after 4 minutes. Gary Lines on the left found Alex Rice coming in at the far post, but the young striker could not keep his shot down on the stretch. Tring begun to find their stride as the half progressed, and just as the first 45 minutes came to an end they took the lead. A harsh free kick was awarded, and when it came into the Holmer goal area O’Connor was able to steer the ball into the goal. HT 1-0
The Greens also started the second half in good fashion. On 58 minutes a long clearance from Gaster deceived the home defence up the slope. Leo Blackman latched onto the ball and put it past the oncoming Hopwood. But just when Holmer should have been consolidating the leveller, an uncharacteristic sloppy piece of play from Ryan Parsons resulted in a corner for Tring. This was poorly defended. A near post header was flicked across the goal, where another header was won by the home side. The ball returned to the near post, where Read reacted quickest to head home. This quick reverse took the wind out of Holmer’s sails, only Gaster’s solid goalkeeping preventing further home scores. Lines had been very busy in midfield, stopping lots of home attacks being set-up. Eventually however he was adjudged to have transgressed once too often, and received a second yellow card. In the last minute of normal time another set-piece made the game safe for Tring against the ten men. This time another corner kick was headed down into the danger area, with Sunderland applying the finishing touch. Mention must go to Matt Wooster who had a fine game in midfield for The Greens, duly acknowledged by Athletic’s veteran correspondent Ralph Griffiths.
