Holmer end Saints 100% start to season
Joffy Cox's first goal for Holmer moves The Greens up to seventh, before Bank Holiday date at Flackwell
Having been beaten two weeks ago at home by Saints, who have had a 100% start to the season, The Greens set themselves up differently this time, and turned the result around. Hit by the late withdrawal of Ryan Parsons, Dan Hunt moved back to show his versatility despite so little experience at this level. Although only 3 games separated the first-ever two meetings between the clubs, The Greens only fielded Brown, Duffy, Stone, Munday, and Wooster, from the first meeting that Saints deservedly won. Lewis Workman made his first start up front with Jamie Britnell, and Gary Lines had finally served his suspension held over from last season to take a place on the bench.
The raisons d’etre for both teams is probably quite different, and so the home side again passed the ball around very nicely. But Holmer didn’t defend so deep this time, and restricted Saints to few real opportunities. In contrast, with much less of the ball over the 90+ minutes, The Greens made three good chances and took the first one to go ahead on 19 minutes. Curtis Stone found Jonathan Cox in space coming in from the right. Joffy took his time and placed the ball under the oncoming Worby from 15 yards. Matt Wooster had to be replaced by Lines on 33 minutes. While some creativity may have been lost, Lines’ movement and attitude was a useful addition in the circumstances. The break seemed to come up fairly quickly, with the away goal still intact. HT 0-1
Not surprisingly, Brackley dominated the second half down the considerable slope. But on 57 minutes Holmer nearly went two up.
Workman got behind the home defence, but Worby came out to save with his legs. The spinning ball went too far wide to be turned back into the empty goal. Saints set up many promising looking attacks with their slick passing and movement. But Holmer was equal to this all over the field. On 87 minutes an uncharacteristic error by the home ‘keeper, was followed by slack passing around the back. Britnell pounced, and worked himself into a good position. Unfortunately he lacked composure at the vital moment, and dragged his shot just wide.
