United get revenge for their only league reverse this season
Holmer unable to match Ascot's resolve
Both Ascot and The Greens had been beaten by lower-ranked opposition in away FA Vase games at the weekend, but the home side seemed more motivated to reverse current trends. Holmer started well enough, and on 4 minutes Tom Fifield had a shot charged down. But Ascot soon got into a pacey rhythm that they kept up for the next hour. The Greens were not able to match this.
On 11 minutes Dean Munday headed wide from a Martin Lancaster set-piece, but United was getting on top, and went ahead on 24 minutes. A Holmer defender dithered on the ball 25 yards out centrally, and Minhas plundered his 14th goal of the season with a crashing shot. It was Aaron Brown against Ascot at this stage, but The Greens held on until stoppage time in the first period. Then Ryan Parsons handled the ball just inside the visitors’ area, and Minhas scored his second from the spot. HT 2-0
On 57 minutes Munday went close again, this time from a Curtis Stone free-kick. But either side of the hour mark the home side put the game out of Holmer’s reach. Firstly Minhas picked up on a rebound to complete his hat-trick. Then Dan Price scored the goal of the game with surging left-wing run. He cut in, and flashed an unstoppable shot across Brown into the far top corner of the goal.
To their credit The Greens got back into the game. On no fewer than six occasions in the last twenty minutes they had the Ascot defence looking uncomfortable in their own penalty-area. But lady- luck, and sloppy finishing, meant that Holmer were not going to score. Inevitably during these closing stages, United looked to hit Holmer on the break. They picked up two cautions as The Greens finally found their form, and United continued to look threatening as they moved up into third place. Only the narrow defeat at Watchet Lane, three weeks previously, denying them top spot.
