Unlucky loss in close game

Big decisions don't go The Greens' way

The Greens found themselves on the wrong end of all the big decisions that the Referee had to make in this game, and didn’t play well enough to overcome the disadvantages encountered. As early as the third minute Lewis Workman was taken out by the oncoming visitors’ ‘keeper, as he rounded him well inside the penalty area. With all spectators expecting an inevitable spot-kick, the man in the middle waved play on and awarded a goal-kick. Worse was to follow on six minutes. A long throw was not dealt with properly by the home defence, but a Virginia Water’s player clearly put the ball into the Holmer goal with his hand. This was not apparently seen by either the Referee or his Assistant. Within two minutes The Greens were level. Pawel Kotwica intercepted a loose pass, and squared the ball for Tom Fifield to sweep into the goal from close range. But again, poor defending allowed the visitors to regain the lead on 12 minutes. Despite Aaron Brown’s good low save a striker was more alert than the Holmer rear-guard and a tap-in put The Greens behind again. Decisions continually went against the home side, but there was no further scoring before the interval. HT 1-2
On 48 minutes Holmer should have equalised. Curtis Stone’s free-kick was met by a Dean Munday diving header. But the effort went just wide of the post. On 57 minutes Munday did have the ball in the net. Meeting a corner with a perfectly-timed run, his header flew into the net. But as the defenders looked around to see which of their number had failed to track the run, the Referee decided that a foul had been committed by someone in Green. Despite no appeals of that manner from the home side. Decisions continued to go almost exclusively against Holmer, to the extent that they had racked up no less than five cautions in the first 70 minutes.
The game had not been rough, dirty, or anything other than played in the correct spirit by both sides. The Referee did now seem to realise that there were two teams on the pitch, and Holmer did get some decisions. The Referee also cautioned two visitors near the end of the game. He still had one other big decision to make. On 82 minutes Dean Powles was pulled back by his shirt when in control of the ball ten yards from goal. Again no decision. The visitors collected all three points, despite an added five minutes when Lewis Workman had two difficult chances with which he could not score his long overdue first Holmer goal.
