Aston Clinton await The Greens in the Wycombe Senior Cup Final
The Greens put more than a dozen seasons of failure to reach a cup final of any sort behind them in decisive fashion. Limiting their opponents to more or less just a single chance in each half while dominating possession themselves. Aaron Brown, Gary Lines, and Matt Wooster (replacing Elliot Britton who pulled up pre-match) returned to the side after being missing for various reasons, over the past few months or games. Wasps doggedly kept themselves in the game as long as possible by chasing and tackling. The Greens survived a scare on 20 minutes when Curtis Stone had to clear off the line at the expense of an injury. Greg Wright having to replace Stone on 34 minutes. Two minutes later a Lines’ corner evaded the defence, and Dean Munday took his tally to seven for the season from close in. Wright and Michael Duffy troubled the busy Wasps’ ‘keeper before half time, but the home side had to be content with a single goal advantage at the break. HT 1-0
Munday might have done better with either of two headers in the opening minutes of the second half, before former-Green Nigel Mpofu was thwarted by Brown on 55 minutes. After Dean Powles had a header well saved one minute later, the livewire Adam Riley was finally much too quick for the Wasps’ defence and drew a penalty. Powles converted with aplomb. Further goals followed on 63, 74, and 85 minutes from Duffy (with a direct free-kick from 25 yards), Zach Crawford in open play with an unstoppable shot from a similar distance, and Dan Wilson from a close-range header.
