League season ends with goalless stalemate away
By John Anderson
Ardley and the Greens both draw a blank
The Greens achieved their third away goalless draw this sea-son, in an open end to end match. This takes Holmer onto 48 points after completing all 36 league games, their fourth-best points per game in 19 seasons at this level. Ardley were very young opponents, and moved the ball around comfortably right from the back to the front. The main action from Holmer in the first half, kicking up the slope, was Anthony Tyson heading wide early on from a Gary Lines’ free-kick and Matt Wooster striking the post on 42 minutes. HT 0-0
With the advantage of the slope, Holmer created far more in the second half. Lines, Pawel Kotwica, and Harrison Holbrook, all put the home goal under pressure. But Ardley were awarded a penalty on 61 minutes after Dean Munday was adjudged to have tripped an opponent. However the spot-kick was put high and wide. On 75 minutes it looked as if Holmer’s pressure had been rewarded. A free-kick was headed back across the Ardley goal by Munday. Lines reacted quickly and turned the ball home. But he was apparently in an offside position and active when the original kick had been played forward. Holmer contin-ued to press for the winner. James Burrell had an effort blocked, as was a double attempt by Lines and Michael Duffy. Ardley had a couple of long-range shots off target on the break.
