Set-piece problems send Holmer to home defeat
By John Anderson
Harpenden profit from poor defending and missed early chances
A young team as usual, was theoretically bolstered by Matt Wooster, Tom Fifield, and Anthony Tyson. All being given game time, after so few 1st XI games since the turn of the year. Harpenden (also without a 1st XI game) included the 'keeper who had kept a clean sheet for their own first string on the same ground seven days earlier. In the opening minutes Callum Liles had a shot blocked, the ball falling nicely for Fifield. But the crisp volley just cleared the crossbar. Next Liles shot over, shortly followed by feeding Hoyte whose shot was saved. But on 23 minutes Town discovered The Greens' achilles heel. A free kick placed between 'keeper Ben Hillery and his defence being headed home by an unmarked visiting defender. After another chance was spurned by Fifield, the visitors repeated their set-piece routine on 32 minutes.
Holmer eventually pulled one back on 66 minutes through Liles. But the come-back only lasted ten minutes before another near post header from a free kick restored the two-goal gap between the teams. Another goal made it 1-4 on 85 minutes, before a stoppage time penalty gave Town their fifth goal.
